“May have a role” is deliberate. A workmanship warranty is not a judicial finding of negligence. An insurance claim is not a warranty claim. A product defect is not the same as improper installation. One party may pay for emergency work while another later accepts, denies, or reimburses a covered portion.
Your first goal is therefore not to make the loudest accusation. It is to get a technically credible cause determination and preserve the documents needed to apply the correct remedy.
How is the cause of a solar roof leak determined?
A competent investigation connects the interior evidence to the roof assembly, array attachments, penetrations, drainage path, and weather conditions. It should not start by assuming “under a panel” means “caused by a panel mount.”

Preserve the as-found condition
Before permanent repair or panel removal, collect:
- wide and close photographs with location references;
- original solar and roof contracts;
- permit drawings, structural documents, inspection records, and equipment list;
- workmanship, penetration, roofing-product, racking, and service-plan warranties;
- home-sale warranty transfer records if you were not the original owner;
- monitoring data and alerts around the event;

Which warranty applies to a leak under a solar array?
Start with the solar installer’s workmanship or roof-penetration warranty, then check the roof contractor’s workmanship warranty, roofing-product warranty, mounting-product warranty, and any separately purchased service contract. Each document covers a different promise.

The exact version matters. Use the warranty in effect when your equipment or roof was installed, not a current marketing page.
Product warranty is not a blanket leak promise
Current mounting instructions show why cause matters. IronRidge’s 2026 flush-mount manual requires composition-shingle pilot holes to be backfilled with roofing-manufacturer-approved sealant and flashing to be placed under specified shingle courses. Other roof types have their own details and compatibility requirements (IronRidge XR Flush Mount manual). A product can be sound while its installation is wrong.
Manufacturer remedies can also be narrow. GAF’s current Timberline Solar limited warranty covers specified assembly manufacturing defects that cause leaks, but lists separate terms, prorating, proof, notice, exclusions, and cost limits. The document excludes some labor and other products, as well as interior or exterior building damage and mold, depending on the claim and provision (GAF Timberline Solar limited warranty). Do not authorize unreviewed alterations
Notify the warrantor before permanent repair when safe and practical. Massachusetts roof-maintenance guidance says owners should contact the contractor or manufacturer promptly when a warranted roof leaks and warns that incompatible or unauthorized work can damage the roof or affect coverage (Massachusetts roof-maintenance guidance).
The same concern applies to solar. Tesla’s current removal-and-reinstallation guidance, for example, permits qualified third-party work but tells owners to review their warranty and says Tesla is not responsible for third-party workmanship or system damage (Tesla removal and reinstallation). Your provider’s terms may differ. Get its written procedure before another contractor disconnects or moves equipment unless an emergency makes that impossible.

Will homeowners insurance pay for a solar roof leak?
It may pay for damage from a covered event, subject to the policy’s terms, exclusions, limits, deductible, valuation, endorsements, and duties after loss. It is not safe to promise that “solar roof leaks are covered” or “workmanship is excluded” without reading the policy and determining the cause.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners advises homeowners who decide to file a claim to notify the insurer promptly, document damaged property with photos and video, keep repair receipts, and provide the facts and extent of damage (NAIC homeowners claim guidance). - Is the rooftop array treated as part of the dwelling under this policy?

- What deductible and valuation method apply to roof, solar, and interior damage?
- Does the insurer need to inspect before permanent repair or panel removal?
- What temporary mitigation is authorized, and which receipts should be saved?
- Are matching, code upgrades, debris removal, water remediation, and additional living expense addressed?
- How should damage to a leased or PPA-owned system be handled?
- Does the insurer require notice before a contractor changes the array or roof?
Do not let a contractor promise claim approval, waive or “absorb” a deductible through inflated pricing, or ask you to sign over broad rights without review. Insurance may also want an opportunity to inspect. Balance that requirement with immediate safety and the duty to prevent additional damage. Ask the adjuster what temporary work is acceptable and document why any emergency work could not wait.
Who pays to remove and reinstall the solar panels?
Removal and reinstallation is a separate cost unless a contract, warranty, service agreement, insurer, or responsible contractor expressly includes it. Never assume the party paying for a roof patch will also pay to de-energize, remove, store, reinstall, test, and recommission the array.

Separate vendors can be appropriate, but one written coordination plan should identify who owns the roof dry-in, equipment custody, electrical safety, inspection corrections, and final leak test.
How should you submit a solar roof leak claim?
Submit a factual, document-backed notice rather than a conclusion you cannot yet prove. The notice should give the installer, roofer, manufacturer, system owner, or insurer enough information to preserve rights, inspect, and respond.
Use this eight-step claim file
- Make the property safe. Record any emergency calls, shutdown, mitigation, or access restriction.
- Open a written service ticket. State when and where water appeared, weather conditions, immediate damage, and whether the leak is active.
- Attach evidence. Include photos, video, monitoring alerts, and a diagram showing the stain relative to the roof and array.
