The quick answer: compare the warranty stack, not one headline
A residential solar system does not have one warranty. It has a stack of manufacturer warranties, installer promises, and service responsibilities. A fair comparison puts each quote into the same columns and refuses to treat “25 years” as a complete answer.
Start by requesting the actual warranty PDFs and the installer’s written workmanship terms. A proposal summary or salesperson’s email is not enough if it conflicts with the contract. The Federal Trade Commission’s solar consumer guidance specifically tells homeowners to compare written bids, equipment warranties, installation-workmanship coverage, and ongoing maintenance responsibility.

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends interviewing several installers and asking what happens under the warranties if a component or the full system has a problem. Those factors matter because a written promise is only useful when the claim path works.
Decision rule: do not award a quote extra points for a long term until you can explain, in one sentence, who takes your call and who pays in a realistic failure scenario.
Which solar warranties are you actually comparing?
Most proposals combine at least six different forms of protection. Their scopes overlap less than the marketing language suggests. Build a warranty inventory using the exact equipment model numbers on each proposal, not the brand name alone.

Product coverage is not performance coverage
A product warranty concerns defects in materials or manufacturing. A performance warranty uses a stated power-retention threshold over time. Neither automatically means an installer will visit your house without charge.
Current manufacturer materials show why model-level review matters. Qcells says its North American solar-panel line has product coverage up to 25 years and performance coverage up to 30 years, while also warning that terms vary by module. REC describes separate product, power, and—when eligibility conditions are met—labor components under REC ProTrust. Brand familiarity does not make these structures interchangeable.
Workmanship coverage is the installer’s promise
A solar workmanship warranty addresses errors in the installation work, subject to its written scope. Examples could include improperly installed mounting, flashing, conduit, or electrical work. It is different from a manufacturer deciding that a panel or inverter is defective.
Ask whether the workmanship document covers both the direct repair and resulting property damage. Do not assume “roof penetration warranty” covers every leak on the roof. The document may require evidence that a solar penetration caused the problem, and damage from storms, aging roofing, ice, animals, or unrelated construction may sit outside its scope.
A service promise is not automatically a warranty
Long-term service answers operational questions: Who reviews an alert? Who performs diagnostics? How do you open a ticket? Will the company work on equipment it did not install? What labor rate applies when the manufacturer supplies a free replacement part?
These commitments can be valuable, but they should not be described as warranty coverage unless the contract makes them enforceable. Ask the installer to mark each item as included warranty work, paid service, manufacturer claim assistance, or not offered.
Test every quote against four real warranty claims
Scenario testing exposes gaps faster than comparing pages of exclusions. Give every installer the same four situations and request written answers. If the response changes from proposal to contract, use the contract.
Scenario 1: the inverter stops producing
Assume monitoring shows a fault and the manufacturer approves a replacement. Ask:
- Who reviews the error and confirms the failed component?
- Who opens the manufacturer claim?
- Who receives the replacement equipment?
- Are shipping, a truck roll, removal, and installation included?
- Is there a labor-coverage limit or time limit?
- What happens if the original model is discontinued?
- Does system downtime trigger any separate production remedy?
The distinction is not theoretical. Enphase’s current Labor Protection Program terms describe payments to an installer for eligible replacement work and make that protection conditional on valid manufacturer coverage. That is a separate layer from the equipment warranty. Your quote should say whether any such labor program applies to your system and who handles it; do not infer enrollment from the equipment logo.
Scenario 2: water appears near a solar attachment
Ask who sends the first inspector, who pays if the cause is disputed, and whether the installer coordinates with the roofer. Also ask what happens when the roof warranty and solar workmanship warranty impose different approved-contractor rules.
For a roof near the end of its service life, the better decision may be to replace it before solar rather than rely on a leak warranty. Scenario 3: one panel appears to underperform
Ask what measurement triggers a claim, who performs the test, what tolerances apply, and who pays for safe roof access. Then ask what remedy is offered: repair, replacement, an equivalent model, or another formula in the warranty.
A system-level production shortfall does not automatically prove one panel breached its performance warranty. Weather, shading, soiling, monitoring errors, inverter clipping, outages, and other system conditions can change annual output. The contractor should explain the diagnostic sequence without promising that every production difference becomes a free panel replacement.
Scenario 4: the installer is sold or closes
Ask which protections survive independently and which disappear with the installer. Manufacturer coverage may remain, subject to its terms, while an installer-written workmanship promise may have no separate provider. Third-party warranty products or manufacturer labor programs can alter that answer, but only when the property and equipment are enrolled and the documents say so.

Manufacturer documents offer concrete examples. The current Tesla Powerwall owner documentation says a reliable internet connection is relevant to maintaining the full warranty term for certain Powerwall coverage; homeowners should review the Powerwall warranty documents for their model and region. REC’s ProTrust page says labor protection depends on program and installer eligibility. Qcells states that warranty terms differ among modules. These are not reasons to reject the products. They are reasons to compare the actual documents attached to the proposed models.
Ask the installer to preserve a closeout package containing:
- final contract and change orders;
- as-built system diagram and permit closeouts;
- manufacturer, model, and serial numbers;
- warranty documents and registration confirmation;
- monitoring ownership and login instructions;
- installer and manufacturer support contacts;
- interconnection and permission-to-operate records; and
- roof photos and relevant roof-warranty documents.
The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center homeowner checklist specifically asks whether warranties are well-defined, whether instructions for using them are provided, and whether the owner receives manuals, diagrams, warranty information, and contact details after installation.
Compare long-term solar service separately from warranty coverage
A strong warranty document does not guarantee a smooth service experience. Compare the installer’s service operation as its own part of the purchase. This is where a slightly higher proposal price may—or may not—buy a clearer ownership path.
Ask every company to answer this service checklist in writing:

New England warranty comparisons should include the roof, weather exclusions, service geography, and state consumer-protection path. Snow, freeze-thaw cycles, coastal exposure, storms, and older housing stock do not automatically create warrantable failures. They do make cause, access, and coordination important.
For each quote, document:
- the current roof material, age, condition, and remaining roof-warranty terms;

In March 2026, the Connecticut Attorney General described complaints involving warranty performance and servicing after solar contract portfolios changed hands. This makes a written escalation and continuity plan a purchase issue, not an administrative detail.
Massachusetts buyers can use MassCEC’s checklist to confirm documents and installer qualifications. Rhode Island’s Office of Energy Resources maintains solar consumer-protection disclosures and retailer-registration information. State registration or a required disclosure does not replace warranty review, but it gives buyers another verification layer.
No homeowner can prove that a company or manufacturer will exist decades from now. How to use the score without fooling yourself
First, require evidence for every point. Second, write a note beside every partial score. Third, compare large differences, not one- or two-point gaps. Finally, keep price, system design, financing, roof suitability, and installer qualifications as separate decision categories.
An installer should lose points when:
- the contract disclaims a promise made in the proposal;
- labor is described as “covered” but capped or conditioned without explanation;
- the equipment model is not fixed;

The FTC advises consumers to compare detailed bids and avoid pressure to sign before review. A credible installer should be able to answer these questions without manufacturing urgency. If a material term remains unclear, pause and ask for a contract revision or written clarification.
When the longest solar warranty is not the best choice
Warranty length is only one input. A shorter, clearly funded and usable promise can be worth more than a longer promise with weak labor coverage, a difficult proof threshold, or no service channel.
Do not let warranty marketing override these purchase factors:
- System design: A well-documented warranty cannot correct a poor layout, unrealistic production model, or unsuitable roof.
- Installation quality: Coverage is a remedy after a problem, not a substitute for qualified work.
- Equipment fit: The best model depends on roof geometry, electrical design, monitoring needs, and storage plans.
- Contract economics: A long warranty does not make unfavorable financing or an unsuitable ownership structure attractive.
- Service capability: A manufacturer may approve a part while you still need a qualified local technician.
- Honest exclusions: No solar warranty should be expected to pay for every storm, roof-aging, insurance, internet, or homeowner-modification issue.
Also distinguish parts replacement from being made whole. A warranty may choose among repair, replacement, equivalent product, or another stated remedy. Lost production, matching panel appearance, drywall repair, roof work, or financing payments may not follow the part. Read the remedy before assigning value.
The right aim is not zero future cost. It is a system with known responsibilities, usable records, reasonable protections, and a service route when something fails.

Is a 25-year solar warranty always comprehensive?
No. “25-year warranty” may refer only to panel product or performance coverage. Check workmanship, roof work, inverter, battery, labor, shipping, diagnostics, transfer, and service separately.
