Why Every Solar Quote Should List Exact Equipment Model Numbers
A solar quote should name every exact panel, inverter, racking, battery, and electrical model so you can verify design, price, compatibility, and warranty.

Every solar quote should list the manufacturer and complete model number for every major component. A brand family, wattage, or phrase such as “premium panel” does not identify the product you are buying. The exact identifier lets you retrieve the right data sheet, test the design math, check compatible equipment and listings, read the applicable warranty, price the actual system, and confirm that the installed hardware matches the agreement.
This is a model-disclosure guide, not a ranking of panels, inverters, batteries, or chargers. Teamsun offers residential solar installation in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, but the same disclosure standard should apply to every bidder—including Teamsun. No product mentioned below is represented as a Teamsun offering.
Direct answer: A solar quote should state each component’s manufacturer, complete model or catalog number, applicable suffix or regional variant, quantity, rating, document revision, and role in the design. It should attach or link the matching data sheet, installation document, certification record where relevant, and warranty. The contract should require written homeowner approval before a model substitution and identify the design, production, price, permit, interconnection, and warranty records that must be updated.
Why is a brand name or wattage not enough?
A brand name identifies a company. A product-family name narrows the catalog. A wattage describes one rating. Only a complete model identifier tells you which product record to verify. The distinction matters because products sold under one family can have different power classes, dimensions, electrical limits, connectors, regional configurations, warranties, and compatible companion equipment.
Suppose two proposals both say “440-watt black panel.” The arithmetic DC size may appear equal, yet the products could differ in width, current, connector, frame height, load rating, warranty document, or approved racking combination. Those differences can change how many modules fit on a roof plane, how strings or microinverters are configured, which attachment manual applies, and whether the design on the proposal can be built as drawn.
The same problem is more obvious with power electronics. “IQ8” is an Enphase family, not one complete equipment selection. Enphase publishes a distinct North American IQ8HC microinverter data sheet and directs designers to its module compatibility calculator. A proposal that says only “Enphase IQ8” has not yet disclosed enough to check the selected unit against the proposed module. This example shows the verification problem; it is not a product recommendation or a statement about Teamsun’s catalog.
The Federal Trade Commission tells homeowners to obtain detailed written bids that identify the system’s brand, size, and performance, and to ensure the final contract matches the proposal and sales claims (FTC solar guidance). Exact models are the practical bridge between those instructions. They turn a sales description into a reproducible equipment schedule.

An exact model does not make a design good. It makes the proposed design auditable. You still need a site survey, layout, production model, one-line diagram, scope, price, and contract. What counts as a complete solar equipment disclosure?
A complete disclosure gives enough information to locate one authoritative product record without guessing. For each material component, ask for the manufacturer, exact model or catalog number, suffixes, quantity, rating, function, and the document version used in the design. If the identifier is preliminary, the quote must say when it becomes final and how a change will be approved.
The minimum record should include:
- Manufacturer legal or trade name. Avoid abbreviations that could refer to several companies.
- Full model, catalog number, or SKU. Copy every letter, dash, digit, and suffix from the manufacturer’s record.
- Regional or connector variant. A North American version, connector type, finish, plug, cable length, or voltage variant can be material.
- Quantity and role. State whether the product is a module, inverter, optimizer, gateway, attachment, disconnect, battery, charger, or service equipment.
- Nameplate rating. Use the relevant unit: watts, volts, amps, kWh, kW, interrupting rating, bus rating, or continuous output.
- Matching source documents. Attach or link the data sheet, installation manual, compatibility result, certification entry where relevant, and warranty.
- Document date or revision. Web pages and PDFs change. Save the version used to engineer and sell the project.
- Status. Mark the selection as preliminary, proposed, approved, permitted, ordered, substituted, or installed.
Do not confuse the product model with its serial number. A model describes a type of product; a serial number identifies one physical unit. The quote can list models and quantities before procurement. At closeout, the homeowner should receive the installed model and serial inventory, because warranty registration, monitoring enrollment, recalls, and later service may depend on those serials.
Also distinguish a marketing name from a catalog number. “Powerwall 3” is a product name. Tesla’s current installation material applies to specified part-number versions, and its quick guide currently says it applies to Powerwall 3 units with P/N 1707000-11-L or 1707000-21-L (Tesla Powerwall 3 quick guide). The point is not that a homeowner must memorize the number. The proposal and design team should preserve it so the correct manual and configuration can be traced.
The quote and contract need the same equipment record
An accurate proposal can still fail as a buying document if the signed contract replaces the equipment table with “or equivalent.” Compare the quote, contract exhibit, permit schedule, utility application, purchase order, approved change orders, commissioning record, and closeout inventory. They should form a chain of revisions, not contradictory snapshots.
Connecticut’s current home-improvement guidance says the written agreement should cover the entire work and price, the quality or brand of materials, and written changes (Connecticut DCP contract guidance). Massachusetts’ sample contract guidance calls for detailed materials and says modifications should be written and agreed by both parties (Massachusetts contract guidance). Those sources do not supply project-specific substitution language. They do support putting material identity and changes in the written deal.
Pass condition: a technically qualified reviewer should be able to retrieve the proposed product documents and connect every model to its quantity and design role without asking the salesperson which item they meant.
How do exact panel models change the roof layout and electrical design?
The exact panel model affects more than total wattage. It sets physical dimensions, weight, frame details, electrical ratings, temperature coefficients, connector information, permitted mounting zones, mechanical loads, and product-specific warranty evidence. Those inputs influence how the array fits, attaches, connects, and performs.
Start with the basic DC-size check:
Module quantity × module nameplate watts = array DC watts
Twenty 440-watt modules equal 8,800 DC watts, or 8.8 kW DC. But that equation proves only the nameplate total. It does not prove that twenty modules fit the shown roof planes or pair with the proposed electronics. The complete model lets you check the rest.
The current North American Qcells Q.TRON BLK M-G2 series data sheet, for example, lists several power classes within one series, along with dimensions, weight, electrical values, load information, connector details, certifications, and a document revision (Qcells Q.TRON BLK M-G2 series data sheet). A quote saying only “Qcells 440W” omits the complete product record. This is an illustration of model-level verification, not an endorsement or claim that Teamsun supplies the series.
Check these fields against the proposed layout and electrical design:

One character can matter. Manufacturers often use suffixes to distinguish power class, frame color, cell count, market, connector, cable, or product generation. Do not infer the meaning yourself. Ask the bidder to highlight the quoted model in the manufacturer’s data sheet and explain each material suffix.
Dimensions deserve special attention on constrained roofs. If a substitute panel is wider, the original row may cross an obstruction, setback, ridge, or roof edge. If it is shorter but lower wattage, the array may need more panels to retain DC size. If the count changes, attachments, wiring, optimizer or microinverter quantities, production, price, and permit drawings may also change. “Same wattage” is not an adequate equivalence test.
The Department of Energy advises buyers to ask which modules an installer uses and why, and to have the roof condition assessed as part of the proposal (DOE choosing an installer). If roof work is in scope, connect the module dimensions and attachment design to the solar and roofing project scope; do not let the solar equipment schedule float separately from the roof plan.
How do inverter, microinverter, and optimizer models change compatibility and output?
The exact power-electronics model determines the electrical operating window, AC output, branch or string limits, grid functions, rapid-shutdown architecture, communications, monitoring, and product-specific warranty. A family name cannot prove that the panel-to-electronics pairing works.
For a string inverter design, the reviewer needs the inverter model plus the proposed string schedule. Check the number of strings, modules per string, input-voltage range, maximum input voltage, input current limits, tracker arrangement, output rating, service voltage, and specified optimizers if used. The cold-condition voltage and expected operating window must fit the design; this work belongs to qualified designers and electricians, not a homeowner using a rule of thumb.
For a microinverter design, identify the microinverter model, quantity, connector or cable system, branch layout, maximum units per branch under the applicable design, gateway/combiner model, and module pairing. Enphase’s current IQ8HC data sheet identifies that specific North American model and directs installers to the manufacturer’s microinverter compatibility calculator. If a quote says only “IQ8,” you cannot reliably know which input and output values or pairing record the designer used.
For an optimizer-based design, list both the inverter and optimizer model. A substitution in either half may affect pairing rules, string lengths, input limits, rapid shutdown, monitoring, and warranty. SolarEdge maintains model-specific residential power optimizer information and states that available inverter warranty extensions depend on the inverter model and serial number (SolarEdge warranty information). Again, these are verification examples, not product recommendations.
DC watts and AC watts are not interchangeable
The module schedule establishes DC nameplate capacity. The inverter or microinverter schedule establishes AC capacity. Divide DC watts by AC watts to calculate the design’s DC-to-AC ratio. That ratio may be intentional; it is not automatically good or bad. It helps explain why two quotes with identical panel watts can have different AC output ceilings, clipping behavior, branch/string architecture, interconnection details, and prices.
Record at least:
- total DC nameplate watts from the exact module count and model;
- total continuous AC rating from the exact inverter or microinverter model and quantity;
- DC-to-AC ratio;
- array-by-array or string-by-string pairing;
- expected clipping included in the production model;
- applicable monitoring and consumption-measurement hardware;
- rapid-shutdown components and their listed system or documented compatibility;
- gateway, combiner, communications, and internet dependencies;
- warranty document and activation/registration requirements.
Do not use a higher model number or larger headline wattage as a shortcut for quality. The right selection is the one that fits the module, roof geometry, electrical service, utility requirements, production goals, code path, warranty, and price. A bid should explain that system logic.
Why do racking and attachment model numbers belong on the quote?
Racking and attachments are part of the solar system, not generic hardware. Exact product identity affects the approved roof type, module-frame fit, clamp zones, spans, loads, bonding and grounding method, fire classification, flashing or seal method, installation instructions, and warranty. “Standard racking included” hides those decisions.
UL explains that PV mounting-system certification under UL 2703 covers mounting, bonding, grounding, and fire-classification functions (UL PV mounting certification). UL’s code-authority guidance also warns that a general “UL 2703 listed” statement is not enough to establish an intended specific combination; the reviewer must verify the listed use and the relevant modules, frames, racks, and conditions (UL Question Corner on PV mounting systems).
That is why the equipment schedule should name:
- racking system and rail or rail-less product family;
- rail, base, mount, bracket, hook, clamp, splice, skirt, and end-cap catalog numbers as material;
- attachment or anchor model and the roof material it is designed to serve;
- flashing, sealant, adhesive, or butyl component specified by the system instructions;
- module-frame dimensions and approved clamp zones;
- attachment spacing and rail span from the project engineering or design table;
- bonding and grounding components;
- roof attachment and installation manual revision;
- any engineer-stamped deviations or site-specific details.
IronRidge’s current RockIt system installation manual illustrates the issue. It contains manufacturer-and-model-pattern tables for approved modules and specifies frame dimensions within the UL 2703 installation record (IronRidge RockIt installation manual). A module or frame change can therefore trigger more than a procurement swap: the installer may need to recheck the documented mounting combination, clamp zones, loads, and drawings.
Ask how the attachment model relates to your roof material. Asphalt shingle, standing-seam metal, corrugated metal, membrane, slate, tile, and low-slope roofs do not share one universal detail. If a preliminary quote cannot yet name every fastener, it should at least name the proposed mounting system and roof attachment method, identify what the survey or engineering review will confirm, and require the final equipment schedule before contract or design approval.
For a roof nearing replacement, exact racking disclosure also matters to future removal and reinstallation. The service company will need to know which components can be reused, which manufacturer instructions apply, and whether replacement parts remain available. The model record reduces guesswork, but it does not promise that a future contractor can obtain discontinued parts.
Which battery, gateway, backup, EV, and service-equipment models should be listed?
When the quote includes storage, backup, an EV charger, or an electrical-service change, list every product that determines power flow and operating mode—not just the consumer-facing device. A battery name alone does not define usable energy, continuous or peak power, inverter architecture, islanding equipment, backed-up loads, expansion path, metering, communications, or service requirements.
For a battery or backup scope, identify:
- battery or integrated storage model and quantity;
- energy capacity and usable-capacity basis stated by the manufacturer;
- continuous and peak power ratings and the conditions for each;
- integrated or separate inverter model;
- gateway, transfer switch, backup switch, or islanding-controller model;
- backup-load panel, smart load controller, meters, current transformers, communications, and expansion hardware;
- included operating mode and utility-program configuration;
- whole-home versus selected-load design, with a load schedule;
- product and labor warranty documents plus commissioning/registration requirements.
Tesla’s current Powerwall installation-document hub shows why “one Powerwall” is not a complete architecture: it separates Powerwall 3 documentation from Gateway 3, Backup Gateway 2, and Backup Switch documents (Tesla installation documents). The current quick guide also limits itself to identified Powerwall 3 part numbers. These model-level references illustrate that the battery and islanding hardware must be disclosed together. They do not establish Teamsun availability, compatibility with your home, or installer qualification.

For an EV charger, write the charger model, plug or connector variant, cord length if material, input/output rating, hardwired or plug-in configuration, breaker and conductor scope, load-management hardware, networking requirements, and any main-panel or service work. ChargePoint’s current U.S. Home Flex page, for example, identifies station model CPH50 and separate NEMA 6-50 and 14-50 model numbers; its installation information connects selected amperage to hardwired or plug-in configuration and circuit sizing (ChargePoint Home Flex installation information). That is precisely why “Level 2 charger included” is incomplete. This is an identity example, not an endorsement or Teamsun product claim. For main electrical work, request the exact main panel, meter-main, transfer equipment, disconnect, breaker, load-management device, transformer, or service component once selected. Catalog numbers can encode bus rating, interrupting rating, enclosure type, number of spaces, breaker family, feed configuration, and environmental rating. Those details must be selected by a qualified professional and accepted through the applicable permit and utility process.
How do listings, rapid shutdown, permits, and utility records depend on models?
Models connect the proposed design to certification and approval records. A logo or generic claim such as “code compliant” is not enough. The installer and reviewing authorities must evaluate the equipment and system under the locally applicable code, manufacturer instructions, listings, utility rules, and site conditions.
UL’s Product iQ platform allows searches by model number, file number, or product category and provides certification information, ratings, and conditions (UL Product iQ certification data). UL also cautions that certification information does not by itself prove a product is suitable for every end use. In other words, finding a listed model is a necessary record check in many designs, not a complete project approval.
Rapid shutdown is a system-design example. Depending on the architecture and locally adopted requirements, the solution may involve module-level electronics, an inverter, dedicated rapid-shutdown equipment, communication conductors, labels, or a listed array-level approach. UL explains that UL 3741 was developed in connection with PV hazard-control and rapid-shutdown requirements (UL code and standards coordination). Do not accept “rapid shutdown included” without the actual equipment and design pathway.
Before signing, ask the bidder to reconcile the model schedule across:

Do not assume every model change requires the same response. A cosmetic part-number change may have no design consequence. A module current change, inverter variant, gateway change, attachment system, battery power class, or electrical-panel catalog change may require engineering, permit, utility, program, price, or warranty updates. The contractor should classify the change in writing and obtain the approvals the project actually requires.
Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island also use solar consumer disclosures in particular programs or transactions. Rhode Island’s direct-ownership net-metering disclosure form expressly requests the make and model of panels and inverters, DC system size, warranty and service information, among other project facts (Rhode Island direct-ownership disclosure). A state form is not a substitute for the full contract, but it shows that model identity is material to a consumer’s decision record.
What should the model-level disclosure table contain?
Use one equipment matrix as the project source of truth. The seller should complete it, attach the matching documents, and update its revision status when the design changes. Blank rows should be marked not applicable rather than silently deleted.

Add four control fields at the top: project address, quote number, equipment-schedule revision, and issue date. At the bottom, add prepared by, homeowner review date, final-design approval date, and references to every signed change order. Those fields prevent an undated screenshot from becoming the only record of what was sold.
Do not ask a salesperson to invent missing engineering. Early in the process, “to be selected after site survey” can be honest. But the contract should set a deadline, selection criteria, homeowner approval right, price treatment, and exit rule before that placeholder becomes installed hardware.

How can you verify a data sheet, warranty, and compatibility record?
Verify documents in a fixed order: normalize the model string, retrieve the manufacturer’s current U.S. record, match its revision and region, test the design inputs, check compatibility and certification records, read the warranty, then archive the evidence. Do not rely on a dealer screenshot when the manufacturer publishes the source.
An eight-step verification workflow
- Copy the model exactly. Preserve spaces, dashes, slash marks, suffixes, connector codes, power class, and revision. Ask whether the identifier is a marketing name, model, catalog number, SKU, or part number.
- Use the manufacturer’s U.S. site. Search the exact identifier in quotation marks or use the support/document library. Confirm that the page or PDF is for the United States or North America when applicable.
- Save the source. Download the data sheet, manual, compatibility result, and warranty. Record URL, title, publication or revision date, retrieval date, and file name.
- Match the identifier inside the document. A search-result title can name a family while the PDF covers only certain variants. Highlight the exact quoted model or the explicit model-pattern rule that includes it.
- Reconcile the design. Check quantity, DC and AC totals, physical dimensions, input/output limits, strings or branches, service voltage, roof method, battery or backup architecture, and monitoring hardware.
- Check compatibility and certification. Use the manufacturer’s current calculator or pairing table and UL Product iQ or the applicable listed-system record where relevant. Save the result; do not settle for “compatible per installer.”

- Freeze the approved revision. Attach the equipment matrix and source files to the contract or design approval as appropriate. At closeout, replace “proposed” with as-built models and serials, and retain prior revisions.
Use a simple file structure:

Name files with the component, full model, document revision, and retrieval date. This may feel meticulous for a home project. It becomes valuable years later when a monitoring portal changes, a warranty claim requires a serial, a roof must be replaced, a buyer asks for records, or a service technician needs to identify a discontinued component.
Watch for four documentation traps:
- a distributor page with specifications copied from an older revision;
- a warranty for the brand but not the quoted model or market;
- an installation manual covering a similar product generation;
- a compatibility statement based only on wattage, ignoring voltage, current, connector, frame, software, or system architecture.
When sources conflict, do not choose the more favorable number. Ask the manufacturer or bidder to resolve the conflict in writing and update the design record.
How do exact models affect production, price, warranty, and future service?
Exact models prevent four different decisions from being blended into one sales claim. They let you ask whether the quoted design produces the modeled energy, whether the price buys the described hardware, whether the warranty applies to it, and whether a future technician can identify and service it.
Production
The production model should use the quoted module and inverter characteristics, exact array geometry, shading, losses, clipping, and system availability assumptions. A model change can alter nameplate DC, AC output, electrical pairing, roof-plane count, and losses. It does not automatically change production materially, but the seller should rerun or justify the estimate rather than saying the substitute is “better.”
This page does not decide whether a production estimate is credible or whether a guarantee exists. It establishes the equipment input that those analyses need. Keep the model schedule aligned with the final production report.
Price
The equipment schedule makes price comparison more honest. Two bids with the same total kW may include different inverter architectures, attachment systems, monitoring, backup hardware, electrical scope, or warranty responsibilities. Conversely, different models may be commercially equivalent for a particular design. The bidder should explain the price and scope consequences, not rely on a brand hierarchy.
Ask for the gross cash price, financed price where applicable, system DC watts, and separately identified battery, roof, EV, and electrical scope. The equipment matrix does not replace a line-item cost review. It stops a bidder from pricing an unnamed category that can later be filled with a materially different product.
Warranty
A “25-year solar warranty” can blend module product coverage, module performance, inverter, optimizer, gateway, battery, racking, roof penetration, workmanship, monitoring, and service promises. Each may have a different provider, term, start event, exclusion, remedy, and claim procedure. Exact models let you match each manufacturer document to the installed component; they do not prove labor is included or that the installer will administer the claim.
Replacement and service
Future repair often begins with model and serial identification. The service provider needs the correct manual, voltage/current limits, communications protocol, firmware/support path, connector and mounting details, warranty status, and replacement compatibility. A discontinued exact-match part may not be available. The original model record helps an engineer determine whether a substitute or redesign is possible; it does not guarantee interchangeability.

Should the inverter model number be in the contract or only the proposal?

Is a panel wattage enough to identify it?

What if the installer says supply changes too quickly to guarantee a model?
