Solar inverter error codes are manufacturer- and model-specific evidence, not a universal diagnosis. Capture the exact code, message, time, LED pattern, model, serial number, monitoring status, and recent events before changing anything. Then use the manufacturer’s current support path to decide whether the next step is a communications fix, licensed electrical diagnosis, warranty claim, paid repair, or replacement.

The short answer: Do not search the number alone or follow a generic power-cycle video. Match the code to the exact manufacturer, model, firmware, country, and system architecture. Preserve the evidence, check for immediate hazards, confirm whether production or only monitoring is affected, and open the correct installer/manufacturer case before paying for a replacement.
What does a solar inverter error code actually tell you?
An inverter code tells you that the equipment or its monitoring platform detected a defined state. It does not, by itself, prove which part failed or who must pay. The same number can mean different things across brands and product families, and one event can be a result rather than the root cause.
For example, an inverter can respond to conditions involving:
- the utility grid or AC connection;
- DC input from the array;
- insulation, ground, arc-fault, or rapid-shutdown protection;
- internal temperature, voltage, relay, sensor, or power-electronics conditions;
- optimizers or microinverters not reporting;
- battery or energy-management communication;
- gateway, Wi-Fi, cellular, Ethernet, or cloud communication;
- commissioning, firmware, grid-profile, or ownership access;
- night mode, standby, curtailment, or another normal operating state.
The code becomes useful only when paired with context:

Search results often publish “universal inverter code” tables. That format is attractive because it appears to give an immediate answer. It is also unsafe and frequently wrong. “Error 04” is not one cross-brand condition, and an English label copied from an old overseas manual may not apply to a North American model or current firmware.
Use the code to route the case, not to buy a part. A qualified technician may need portal logs, electrical measurements, manufacturer-directed tests, and the approved one-line before determining whether the inverter, array, utility connection, communications equipment, or another component is responsible.
Which inverter alerts need immediate safety action?
Smoke, flame, arcing, a burning smell, abnormal heat with other warning signs, water inside electrical equipment, exposed conductors, shock, a damaged battery, or severely displaced solar equipment should be treated as a safety event. Keep people away, call 911 when fire or immediate danger may be present, and contact the utility or appropriate responder as directed. Do not open the inverter or climb onto the roof.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration identifies electrocution, electric shock, burns, arc flash, falls, and overhead-line contact as solar electrical hazards (OSHA solar electrical hazards). Photovoltaic modules can produce DC power in daylight even when an AC breaker is off. A homeowner-visible disconnect is not permission to open enclosures or handle conductors.

Tesla’s current troubleshooting page notes that a blank screen and unlit indicators can be normal Night Mode after dark (Tesla system troubleshooting). That is a good example of why time and operating state matter. It is not a reason to dismiss a blank unit during daylight or one accompanied by damage.
Never suppress an arc-fault, insulation, ground-fault, rapid-shutdown, battery, or repeated protective event just to restore production. A protection event may be doing its job. Record it and let the manufacturer’s current instructions and qualified professionals control the next step.
What should you capture before an inverter reset or service call?
Capture one complete evidence packet before a reset, app logout, firmware change, or account transfer. A useful packet lets an installer or manufacturer reproduce the event history and determine whether remote support is possible.

- Service address and homeowner contact.
- Ownership type: owned, financed purchase, lease, PPA, estate, trust, condo, or transferred home.
- Inverter manufacturer, complete model, and serial number.
- Optimizer, microinverter, gateway, battery, and shutdown-device models where applicable.
- Exact code or event text—do not paraphrase.
- Screenshot of the full alert screen, including date and device.
- Photo or short video of the LED pattern and display from a safe position.
- First occurrence, last occurrence, duration, recurrence, and whether it self-cleared.

Do not send account passwords by ordinary email. Use the manufacturer’s owner invitation, installer-access, site-transfer, or secure support workflow. If the original owner still controls the account, begin the ownership-transfer process before assuming the equipment is unsupported.
SolarEdge’s on-site troubleshooting checklist specifically tells installers to gather error codes, inverter behavior, recent events, system information, and relevant evidence before contacting support (SolarEdge troubleshooting checklist). Enphase’s current RMA procedure requires proof of purchase, model, serial number, detailed defect description, and shipping address when a warranty return is requested (Enphase RMA procedure). The evidence packet serves both diagnosis and claim routing.
How do SolarEdge, Enphase, Tesla, and other manufacturers route faults?
Each manufacturer uses a different combination of physical status, owner app, installer portal, serial-number records, support cases, and RMA approval. Use the brand-specific workflow for the exact installed product; do not transplant a SolarEdge code into an Enphase or Tesla decision.

This table routes the question. It does not promise that a manufacturer will approve a replacement or that an independent installer can commission every system. The current model, region, firmware, ownership, installer access, electrical condition, and warranty terms still control.

What should a SolarEdge owner do with an error code?
A SolarEdge owner should capture the exact error, LED pattern, inverter model and serial, monitoring status, and recent system events, then route the case through the installer or SolarEdge support. A red LED signals a system error, but the light alone does not identify the failed component.
SolarEdge’s current LED status guide distinguishes communication, production, AC-connected/no-production, and system-error states. Its verifying inverter status guide shows how the owner app can display production and communication information and lets an installer request an advanced view. Follow only the owner actions shown for the exact product and current app.
SolarEdge case packet
- Full inverter model and serial.
- Exact error string, including letters, numbers, punctuation, and capitalization.
- Red/green/blue LED pattern and inverter switch position observed without opening equipment.
- mySolarEdge screenshots, site name, and last communication time.
- Current inverter production and optimizer communication count if visible.
- Date/time of the event and whether it repeats at a similar time or operating state.
- Grid outage, storm, roof work, service work, internet change, or utility notice.
- Original installer and current portal administrator.
- Warranty-status check and any prior SolarEdge case or RMA.
SolarEdge says most service-related questions are handled by the installer and offers a find-an-installer route when needed (SolarEdge contact guidance). If the original installer controls the portal, SolarEdge provides a process to assign the monitoring site to a new installation company (SolarEdge site transfer). Resolve that access issue before paying a contractor to diagnose blind.
Do not infer from a few optimizer tiles showing zero that each optimizer failed. When the central inverter is offline or communication is interrupted, device data can be incomplete or stale. The installer should confirm timestamps, inverter state, communications, and manufacturer findings before quoting roof-level replacement.
For warranty, check the serial rather than relying on a brand-wide term. SolarEdge’s owner warranty page says standard inverter coverage and extensions vary by inverter model and that communications accessories are not included in the inverter extension (SolarEdge warranty question). SolarEdge’s January 2026 warranty reimbursement guidelines apply labor compensation only to approved RMA replacements meeting stated conditions. The document says lost production is not covered by that reimbursement policy and requires advance RMA issuance. Ask the contractor what amount, if any, the manufacturer reimburses and what labor, travel, permitting, access, or commissioning charge remains yours.
What should an Enphase owner do with an event or device alert?
An Enphase system often reports events through the IQ Gateway and Enphase App rather than displaying one central-inverter code. Capture the exact system status, gateway condition, affected microinverter serials, array view, last report time, and production before assuming the microinverter has failed.
Enphase’s homeowner support page separates topics such as Gateway Not Reporting, Microinverter Not Reporting, low production, ownership transfer, and access for a new maintainer. Those statuses are different decisions:

Enphase explains that “Gateway Not Reporting” means the IQ Gateway has lost internet connectivity and is not sending data to the cloud (Enphase troubleshooting and support). That message alone does not prove the array stopped generating. This page does not reproduce the full monitoring-app workflow because B167 owns monitoring-app failures.
When equipment failure is suspected, use the formal claim process. Enphase’s May 2026 U.S. and Canada RMA procedure says the owner may contact the installer of record or find a service firm; solar professionals can troubleshoot and submit the claim. The RMA request needs proof of purchase, model, serial number, detailed defect description, and shipping address. A part should not be returned without an RMA.
Enphase installation documents warn that microinverters contain no user-serviceable parts and should not be opened or repaired by the homeowner. Current documentation directs a failed unit through Enphase Support and RMA, with installer-only troubleshooting steps and electrical-safety warnings (Enphase microinverter documentation). Do not convert an installer procedure into a homeowner tutorial.
Product warranty and labor are separate. Enphase’s Labor Protection Program applies only to enrolled, eligible covered property and scheduled reimbursement; expenses can exceed the program amount. Ask whether the site is enrolled, the product remains under its manufacturer warranty, the service company can submit, and the quote credits the reimbursement transparently.
What should a Tesla solar owner do with an inverter alert?
A Tesla solar owner should first identify whether the installed inverter is a Tesla Solar Inverter or a third-party inverter connected through a Tesla Solar Gateway. Then capture the app alert, product model/part number, serial, registration, connectivity, inverter status, and current production. Tesla’s support route differs by equipment and installer.
Tesla’s system troubleshooting page distinguishes System Failure—an inverter error, no production, or no power—from Bridge Offline, where the inverter may show production but data is not updating in the Tesla app. That distinction prevents a communications problem from being treated as an inverter replacement.

Tesla says a Tesla Solar Inverter must be registered to the Tesla Account for app power-flow and monitoring data and provides an ownership-transfer route when the product is already registered (Tesla inverter registration). Its service page says Tesla-installed systems route to Tesla support through the app, while a third-party-installed system may show the installer’s contact.
Only use a Tesla power-cycle instruction when the exact official page presents it for the exact connectivity/troubleshooting condition, no safety warning is present, and the person is authorized to operate the named breaker. Tesla’s current connection page contains product-specific steps and warns that extended loss of connectivity or registration can affect remote updates and full limited-warranty treatment (Tesla inverter connection guidance). Do not generalize that sequence to SolarEdge, Enphase, SMA, Fronius, or another model.
Tesla’s current Solar Inverter limited warranty should be read with the exact product and contract. An owner should verify registration, connectivity duties, covered remedy, exclusions, service path, labor, and transfer rather than assuming every alert triggers a free visit.
How should owners of SMA, Fronius, and other inverters route codes?
Use the manufacturer’s current North American support center, exact product manual, model, serial, event/state code, and registered owner/installer account. Do not rely on a global code table or a manual for a similarly named model sold in another market.
SMA America’s support center lets users filter information by error code, register products, create a service request, and request an in-warranty replacement subject to approval. The remaining warranty transfers to an approved replacement according to that page. That is a model-aware path, not a promise that every event receives an RMA.
Fronius uses “state codes” and directs installers through Solar.SOS. Fronius says the tool uses the inverter serial or state code for troubleshooting and permits replacement-part ordering for qualifying Fronius Solutions Partners (Fronius Solar.SOS). Its owner warranty page says claims are handled between the installer and Fronius and that registration and user permissions affect warranty records (Fronius warranty guidance).
For Growatt, APsystems, Sungrow, Solis, ABB/FIMER, legacy SunPower, or another system, use the same routing pattern:
- Identify complete model, serial, country/region, firmware, and architecture.
- Capture exact code, message, LEDs, time, recurrence, and production/communication state.
- Find the manufacturer’s current U.S. owner/installer support page and model manual.
- Confirm legal owner, installer of record, portal administrator, and warranty claimant.
- Determine whether the manufacturer requires installer testing, portal logs, photos, measurements, or an approved partner.
- Open a support case and preserve its number.
- Obtain written RMA approval before returning or replacing a claimed part.
- Price uncovered diagnosis, access, labor, shipping, permits, and commissioning separately.
If the manufacturer or model is obsolete, do not improvise with an internet part solely because the connector fits. Compatibility, listings, grid profile, rapid shutdown, array voltage/current, grounding, communications, utility approval, and code requirements can force a broader redesign.
When is an inverter reset safe and appropriate?
A reset is appropriate only when the exact manufacturer’s current owner guidance instructs it for the exact symptom, the system has no safety warning or physical damage, and the person is authorized and comfortable operating only the identified user control. A generic “AC off, DC off, wait, reverse the sequence” procedure is not universal.

Before any approved reset, capture the event packet. Afterward, record the exact sequence, time, and result. Stop after the manufacturer-authorized attempt if the condition repeats. Repeated resets can hide an intermittent condition without correcting it.
The FTC and DOE recommend qualified solar providers and written repair/warranty responsibility. State licensing narrows who may perform electrical work. Connecticut DCP, for example, says limited PV license holders cannot connect to existing building panels, circuits, wiring, junction boxes, or the utility meter; those tasks require E-1/E-2 license scope (Connecticut solar license scope). Massachusetts and Rhode Island likewise impose electrical-license boundaries. Manufacturer certification does not replace the state license.
Is the code a warranty claim, paid repair, or monitoring issue?
Route the event through five questions: Is production affected? Is the equipment defective? Is the defect covered? Does the warranty remedy include the needed part? Who pays diagnosis, labor, access, shipping, permits, commissioning, and downtime? The code alone answers none of those completely.

The Federal Trade Commission says a warranty can cover a lot or a little and tells consumers to check the remedy, exclusions, claim process, labor, and shipping (FTC warranty guidance). It also distinguishes a separately purchased service contract from a product warranty.
Do not accept “the inverter is under warranty, so it will be free.” Ask for:
- the exact warranty document and serial-based expiration;
- the manufacturer case and RMA number;
- the part or remedy approved;
- shipping destination, return deadline, and old-part handling;
- manufacturer labor reimbursement or service-plan eligibility;
- contractor diagnostic, travel, access, electrical, roof, permit, and commissioning charges;
- lost-production treatment, if any;
- warranty remaining on the replacement;
- plan if the replacement is not electrically or physically equivalent.

When should you repair or replace the inverter?
Repair or warranty replacement is usually rational when the fault is confirmed, an approved supported component exists, the rest of the system is compatible and sound, commissioning access remains available, and the complete installed cost is proportionate. A redesign becomes more rational when obsolete equipment, repeated failures, locked software, unavailable parts, or future goals make a narrow repair poor value.

If replacement changes capacity, inverter type, grid settings, rapid shutdown, service connection, battery integration, or approved equipment, ask who handles engineering, permits, inspection, utility notification, and updated monitoring. Do not label a redesign “like for like” merely because both boxes are inverters.

A strong quote separates diagnosis, manufacturer claim work, replacement labor, equipment, access, permits, and commissioning. It defines what proves the fault and what proves the repair is complete.
