The short version: A license answers whether a person or business is legally authorized for a defined scope. Insurance addresses certain financial risks. A certification shows additional training or practices. None of the three, by itself, proves that a proposal is fair or that the installation will be good.
What should you verify before hiring a solar installer?
Verify the credential chain, not a logo or a single license number. A residential solar transaction may involve a sales company, an installation contractor, an electrical contractor, a roofing subcontractor, and a lender. The name on the proposal may not be the name pulling the permit.
Ask every bidder to complete this table in writing:

The key test is simple: Can the installer connect every company and person in that table to your project in writing? A salesperson saying “our partner has the license” is not enough. You need the partner’s legal name, number, role, and responsibility in the contract.
The U.S. Department of Energy recommends researching and interviewing several installers, confirming that they are licensed and insured for residential solar in the area, and checking subcontractors’ credentials too. DOE also recommends comparing experience, references, warranties, equipment, and prices—not treating a credential as the whole decision (DOE, “Choosing a Solar Installer”).
How do you verify a solar installer license in Connecticut, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island?
Use the state website, search the number and name, and open the full record. A screenshot supplied by a salesperson may be old, cropped, or tied to a different company. As of August 2026, these are the official starting points for Teamsun’s confirmed core markets:

These records are not interchangeable. Search the company name and the qualifying individual’s name where the portal permits it. If the result shows a different address or legal entity, ask for a written explanation before proceeding.
Connecticut: distinguish contracting authority from electrical scope
Connecticut’s Department of Consumer Protection says a credential must match the contractor’s identity and be sufficient for the work. Its February 2025 consumer alert specifically tells homeowners to verify credentials in the public eLicense system rather than accept them at face value (Connecticut DCP consumer alert).
Solar-electric scope matters. Connecticut lists PV-1 as a limited solar electric contractor credential and PV-2 as a limited solar electric journeyperson credential. The state also says PV-1 and PV-2 holders are not permitted to connect to an existing panel, circuit, building wiring, or utility meter; that connection requires an E-1 or E-2 license holder. A PV-2 holder works while employed by a licensed electrical contractor (Connecticut solar license scopes).
That does not mean every worker needs the same license. It means the company should be able to name the contractor of record, explain which licensed people cover each part of the job, and show how apprentices or journeypeople are supervised. Connecticut also distinguishes contractor credentials from employee or journeyperson credentials: only appropriately licensed contractors can obtain permits and contract directly for covered electrical work (Connecticut electrician guidance).
Massachusetts: check registration and trade licensing separately
Massachusetts says a contractor that solicits, bids, or performs work on an existing owner-occupied one-to-four-unit property generally must hold a Home Improvement Contractor registration. Its current HIC resource expressly lists solar panels as work needing HIC registration, a permit, and licensed trades as required by law (Massachusetts HIC contractor resources).
Then verify the electrical credential. Massachusetts explains that a company performing electrical work needs the applicable business license and a licensee of record; use the occupational board lookup for the named electrical business and license holder (Massachusetts electricians FAQ). If a proposal includes roofing or structural work, ask the local building department whether a Construction Supervisor License or another credential applies to that scope.
Rhode Island: identify the seller, installer, and electrician
Rhode Island’s Attorney General warns that the sales company, installation company, and finance company can be three different businesses. The AG says solar installation companies must be registered contractors with the Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board or licensed as Renewable Energy Professionals through the state, and urges consumers to identify the electrician and whether that person is an employee or subcontractor (Rhode Island AG Solar Panel Initiative).
An electrical contractor license already includes work covered by Rhode Island’s limited Renewable Energy Professional credential; the limited REP path applies to certain installers without an electrical license. The Office of Energy Resources publishes the current REP explanation and list, while noting that the list is not a state endorsement (Rhode Island REP guidance). Verify electrical credentials through DLT and contractor registration through CRLB.
If a lookup result is ambiguous, call the licensing board or your municipal building official. Ask: “Which credential must the contractor pulling this project’s building and electrical permits hold?” That is safer than asking a salesperson to interpret the law.
How do you verify solar installer insurance?
Ask for a current certificate of insurance for general liability and workers’ compensation, then confirm it with the agent or carrier shown on the certificate. The legal entity on the certificate should match the company doing the work. The policy dates should cover the expected installation period.
Use this four-step insurance check:
- Request the certificate after you know the crew structure. If electrical or roofing work is subcontracted, request the subcontractor’s proof too.
- Match names exactly. A policy for a related LLC, owner, sales dealer, or parent company may not insure the contracting entity or crew on your roof.
- Contact the issuing agent using independently confirmed contact information. Ask whether the policy is active, whether the certificate reflects current limits, and whether the described operations include the work being proposed. A certificate is evidence of coverage on the issue date; it is not the policy itself or a guarantee that every claim will be covered.
- Ask your homeowners insurer what it needs. Confirm whether it wants notice before installation and whether roof-mounted solar, batteries, detached structures, or an umbrella policy change your coverage.

Do not use a generic internet minimum as your decision rule. Requirements differ. Connecticut’s current HIC checklist says registered home-improvement contractors must have at least $20,000 in general liability coverage and tells consumers to verify active workers’ compensation and liability policies (Connecticut contractor checklist). Rhode Island’s homeowner notice says registered contractors must maintain at least $500,000 in general liability insurance and state-required workers’ compensation (Rhode Island homeowner notice). A regulatory floor is not a judgment that the limit is sufficient for your home or project. Ask your insurance adviser about that.
Massachusetts consumer guidance likewise recommends proof of liability and workers’ compensation insurance. It also warns that homeowners can face exposure in some circumstances when a worker is injured, which is one reason not to skip this check (Massachusetts contractor-scam guidance).
What does NABCEP certification prove—and what does it not prove?
NABCEP certification is a voluntary professional credential, not a state contractor license. It can support an installer’s claim to role-specific solar knowledge, but it does not authorize someone to contract, pull a permit, or perform regulated work where a government license is required.
NABCEP offers several credentials. For a residential PV project, the name most buyers encounter is PV Installation Professional (PVIP). Other credentials cover design, sales, commissioning and maintenance, inspections, or energy storage. NABCEP also has company accreditation, which is different from an individual employee’s certification.
Verify any claim in the NABCEP Professional Directory. Search by the person’s name or certification number, confirm the credential type and expiration, and ask what role that person will have on your job. NABCEP’s own directory terms state that certification is not a government-issued professional license and does not authorize practice (NABCEP directory terms).

The practical takeaway: voluntary certification is a positive comparison factor when verified and relevant. It is not a substitute for the right state licenses, current insurance, local references, a complete proposal, or a clear workmanship warranty.
How can you tell whether the licensed person is connected to your project?
Trace the license from the public record into the contract, permit, and crew plan. A valid license belonging to an unrelated person does not protect you.
Ask the bidder these questions before signing:
- What is the exact legal name of the company contracting with me?
- Which company will install the racking, modules, inverter, and battery?
- Who is the electrical contractor of record, and what is the license number?
- Who will pull the building and electrical permits?
- Will any roofing, trenching, tree, structural, or panel-upgrade work be subcontracted?
- Will you identify every subcontractor in writing before work starts?
- Who supervises the crew, and which verified credential does that person hold?
- Which company provides the workmanship warranty and responds to a roof or wiring problem?
- Will the insurance certificates cover the entities and people actually performing the work?
Then compare those answers with the permit application when it becomes available. The names should form one continuous chain:
Proposal entity → signed contract entity → installation company → licensed contractor of record → permit applicant → warranty provider

Which license and insurance red flags should stop the deal?
Pause the purchase when a company will not provide information that the state expects you to verify. Do not let a same-day discount turn a correctable paperwork question into a signed contract.
Treat these as stop-and-resolve issues:
- The number is expired, suspended, listed under another entity, or not found.
- The credential is active but its scope does not cover the proposed work.
- The salesperson names a “licensed partner” but will not identify that partner in writing.
- The company wants you to pull an owner permit even though it controls and performs the project. Massachusetts explicitly warns homeowners against applying for their own permit when they have hired a contractor because doing so can affect HIC program protections (Massachusetts building-permit warning).
- The certificate of insurance is expired, names the wrong business, or excludes the period when crews will be on site.
- The general contractor is insured but the actual electrical or roofing subcontractor cannot show coverage.
- “Certified installers” appears in marketing, but no person, credential, number, or expiration is provided.
- The contract does not name who pulls permits, completes interconnection, corrects failed inspections, or provides workmanship service.
- The company says a permit proves everything is legitimate, so pre-contract verification is unnecessary.
A permit and inspection are important consumer protections, but they happen after the hiring decision and cover code compliance at defined stages. They do not evaluate financing terms, production assumptions, responsiveness, warranty strength, or whether the price is competitive.
How should licenses and insurance affect your installer decision?
Use credentials as a pass/fail gate, then compare the installers that pass on project quality and accountability. A cheaper bid should not rescue a failed license or insurance check. Likewise, a long list of certifications should not rescue a vague design or contract.

Do not treat the total as a scientific rating. Use it to expose missing documents and compare the same facts across bidders. Any zero in state credentials or insurance should be resolved before you evaluate price.

Is a solar company license held by the company or by a person?
It can be either, and several records may apply. A state may register the contracting business while licensing an individual electrician or qualifying person. Ask for both the exact legal entity and the licensed contractor of record, then verify each in the appropriate database.
Does NABCEP certification mean a solar installer is licensed?
No. NABCEP is a voluntary credentialing organization. Its certification can show that a person met requirements for a defined solar role, but it is not a government license and does not authorize regulated work by itself.
What insurance should a solar installer carry?
Start with commercial general liability and workers’ compensation where required. Depending on the business and scope, commercial auto or professional coverage may also matter. What if an installer is based in another state?
Verify the credentials required in the state and municipality where your home is located. An out-of-state license does not automatically authorize local contracting or electrical work. What should I do if a credential expires after I sign?
