For a new solar-plus-storage project, Tesla Powerwall 3 is usually the more direct of these two systems to quote when high power from one base unit and an integrated solar inverter fit the array. Enphase IQ Battery 10C is usually the more natural finalist when a homeowner wants current fourth-generation Enphase architecture, 10-kWh expansion steps, and an AC-coupled design. Neither is the automatic winner for an existing Enphase solar home: the 10C requires IQ Combiner 6C, cannot join an older Enphase battery generation, and may require the existing gateway architecture to change.
This comparison matches current U.S. products as of August 10, 2026: Powerwall 3 part-number family 1707000-xx-y and IQ Battery 10C model IQBATTERY-10C-1P-NA. It does not compare Powerwall 2, the older IQ Battery 10/10T, or IQ Battery 5P as a new-system substitute. The 5P appears only where an owner of that installed generation needs to understand the no-mixing boundary.

Direct answer: Put Powerwall 3 first on the quote list when its integrated six-MPPT solar inverter, 13.5 kWh, and up-to-11.5-kW continuous rating fit a new solar design or a high-power base system. Put IQ Battery 10C first when its AC-coupled fourth-generation Enphase system, 10.0-kWh increments, Combiner 6C controls, and documented replaceable components fit the site. Stop before choosing either if the proposed backup loads, existing equipment, winter location, utility-approved backup interface, or local service path is still unknown.

What exact Powerwall 3 and Enphase 10C specifications are comparable?
Energy, continuous output, short-duration current, and motor-start evidence answer different questions. Do not turn all four into one synthetic “power” score. Tesla publishes kilowatts and locked-rotor amperes; Enphase publishes kilovolt-amperes, current over stated durations, and locked-rotor amperes. A designer must preserve those units and test the actual 120/240 V loads, power factor, imbalance, start current, other simultaneous loads, and configured limits.

One Powerwall 3 therefore has more published energy and continuous output than one 10C. That does not prove it can run a particular home or last a stated number of hours. A multi-unit 10C design adds energy and power, while a Powerwall 3 Expansion adds energy but no inverter power. The correct comparison is the complete configured system that passes the load calculation.
Tesla also lists a configurable 15.4-kW maximum continuous off-grid discharge condition for a qualifying 11.5-kW Powerwall 3 with PV, at specified temperatures, breaker, and conductor requirements. That is not the ordinary on-grid continuous rating and should not replace 11.5 kW in a simple table. Likewise, Enphase’s short-duration amperes should not be converted into a universal peak-kW claim.
How do their solar architectures change a new installation or retrofit?
Powerwall 3 combines storage with a solar inverter that accepts up to 20 kW DC and provides six MPPTs. In a compatible new project, that can consolidate the solar and battery conversion path. Tesla requires its Mid-Circuit Interrupters on PV strings connected to Powerwall 3 and says third-party devices cannot replace Backup Switch, Backup Gateway 2, or Gateway 3. Array voltage, string current, rapid shutdown, roof geometry, service equipment, and utility rules still decide whether the integrated path works (Tesla system design considerations).
Powerwall 3 can also be added to existing solar. Tesla says it is compatible with major solar inverter brands but warns that supported-system and territory limitations apply (Tesla Powerwall 3 expectations). Treat that as a route to engineering review, not blanket compatibility. The proposal should list the existing inverter, optimizer or microinverter, rapid-shutdown equipment, gateway, production meter, firmware, ownership, interconnection approval, and monitoring access.
IQ Battery 10C is AC-coupled: its battery microinverters connect to the home’s AC system separately from the solar conversion. The current fourth-generation system requires IQ Combiner 6C. Backup requires the IQ Meter Collar to isolate the home from the grid; without that collar, Enphase says the 10C can operate but will not provide backup. Current Enphase documentation supports several IQ6, IQ7, IQ8, and IQ9N PV configurations, but the exact microinverter, branch, metering, control, and utility design must match the current compatibility matrix.
An existing Enphase logo does not settle the decision. Enphase says a 10C cannot use an existing older IQ Gateway or older IQ Combiner. Certain IQ-series PV can be moved into Combiner 6C, while M-series PV remains on an IQ Gateway Metered architecture and connects through a documented control path. Most important, IQ Battery 10C cannot directly integrate with IQ Battery 5P, 3/3T, or 10/10T; the older battery system must remain on separate architecture (Enphase fourth-generation documentation and FAQ).

Teamsun’s battery retrofit service is the relevant project route for an existing array. It is not evidence that either exact product or any mixed-generation design is supported.
Which backup hardware and expansion path fit the job?
Neither battery box provides code-compliant backup by itself. Powerwall 3 uses a Tesla Backup Switch, Backup Gateway 2, or Gateway 3 under the approved design. Whether the project uses whole-home or partial-home backup depends on utility acceptance, service layout, load limits, and the selected islanding device. A “whole-home” diagram does not mean every appliance can run together or indefinitely.
IQ Battery 10C uses IQ Combiner 6C for system aggregation and IQ Gateway functions. Grid-forming backup requires IQ Meter Collar. A partial-backup design may still require a subpanel or documented load-control approach. The utility must accept the meter-collar configuration; the local authority has jurisdiction over the permitted installation.
The expansion choices are materially different:
- A Powerwall 3 Expansion adds 13.5 kWh but no inverter. Tesla explicitly says expansion units do not increase the backup loads the system can support. Up to three expansions can connect to the leader Powerwall 3, and a system can contain up to four Powerwall 3 base units plus three expansions. Only compatible Powerwall 3 revisions qualify, and expansions are not field-serviceable (Tesla expansion design rules).
- Each additional IQ Battery 10C adds a 10-kWh battery with embedded microinverters. Combiner 6C supports two battery circuits; Enphase says up to eight 10Cs and 80 kWh can be configured when its battery-oversubscription controls are used. That manufacturer maximum is not a promise that all units can deliver nameplate output simultaneously through the site wiring or interconnection.
Choose a base-unit count from loads and motor starts first. Then add energy for the outage-duration objective. A Powerwall expansion cannot fix a power shortfall. An additional 10C changes energy, power electronics, branch loading, wall space, and controls; the engineer must recalculate all of them.
Use blank arithmetic, not a runtime promise:
Planning load energy (kWh) = sum of average load kW × intended hours
Required delivered energy = planning load energy + documented reserve and modeled temperature, conversion, and aging allowances
Actual runtime changes with state of charge, cycling loads, occupant behavior, temperature, battery age, solar production, snow, and program dispatch. The B133 sizing page will own the deeper whole-home calculation; this comparison uses sizing only to decide which complete configuration deserves a quote.
Which battery has the better New England temperature and placement case?
Both products publish a -4°F lower operating endpoint and an indoor/outdoor NEMA 3R pathway. Those similarities hide important differences. An operating endpoint is not a promise of full charge power, full discharge power, or preferred battery life at that temperature.

A New England proposal should show the exact location, winter design temperature, expected charge and discharge derating, snow and ice clearance, drainage, flood exposure, direct sun, salt or coastal exposure, vehicle impact, wall/foundation capacity, working space, communications, and service access. The manufacturer manual and local building, electrical, and fire officials control. “Outdoor rated” is not a winter-performance calculation.
Can the efficiency numbers identify a winner?
No. Tesla publishes 89% solar-to-battery-to-home/grid efficiency for a typical solar-shifting use case at beginning of life, 77°F, and 3.3-kW charge/discharge power. Enphase publishes 90% AC round-trip efficiency for the 10C under its data-sheet test conditions. The endpoints differ.
Tesla’s figure begins with solar on the integrated DC path and ends at the home or grid. Enphase’s AC round-trip figure measures energy into and back out of the battery at its AC terminals, so it includes the 10C battery-inverter conversion but not the separate solar microinverters’ earlier conversion. Comparing 89% with 90% as though they were the same laboratory test would be misleading.
The installed result also includes tare or standby use, part-load operation, temperature, clipping or control limits, wiring, metering boundaries, state-of-charge window, and the home’s dispatch pattern. Ask each bidder for:
- The exact efficiency metric and source document.
- Measurement start and end points.
- Test temperature and power level.
- Which solar-inverter losses are included.
- Estimated auxiliary consumption and what monitoring labels as home use.
- A project model using the same annual load and production inputs.
Do not use an efficiency percentage to manufacture annual savings. No verified same-home Teamsun monitoring set was available to compare these systems.
How do the warranties, monitoring, and service paths differ?
Tesla’s current U.S. Powerwall warranty is effective May 6, 2026. It covers the Powerwall 3 family for 10 years and states 70% of 13.5 kWh at year 10. Solar self-consumption, time-based control, and backup receive unlimited-cycle treatment; an application outside the listed set, or a combination including an unlisted application, uses a 37.8-MWh aggregate-throughput limit. The document requires purchase through Tesla or a Tesla Certified Installer and addresses registration and extended internet loss. Tesla may repair, replace, or refund under the stated remedy, and reasonable Certified Installer labor reimbursement is subject to Tesla policy (current Tesla U.S. warranty).
The current Enphase U.S. warranty covers IQBATTERY-10C-1P-NA for the earlier of 15 years or 6,000 discharged cycles. It states at least 70% of nameplate at year 10 and 60% at the end of the limited-warranty period. It includes registration language, with an explicit exception where state law—including Connecticut law—forbids registration as a condition. Transfer requires the product to remain at the original location plus Enphase’s ownership form and applicable fee. The warranty says internet should remain connected and expressly excludes uninstall/reinstall and electrical-system labor (current Enphase 10C U.S. warranty).
The headline “15 versus 10 years” is therefore incomplete. Ask the installer to fill this matrix:

Powerwall uses the Tesla app and publishes Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and cellular connectivity; Tesla says customer internet is expected and cellular should not be the primary connection. Enphase uses wired control communication among current system components, the IQ Gateway in Combiner 6C, and Enphase App/Installer Platform monitoring. Enphase lists field-replaceable 10C components and says installers can replace some RMA components. Tesla publishes a service manual and restricts opening and service to Tesla-qualified personnel. Those facts define different service workflows; they do not prove one brand is more reliable or that a particular local company can support it.

What about generators and Connecticut, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island programs?
Neither product offers the simple generator answer buyers often expect. Tesla documents Powerwall alongside a generator using an external automatic or manual transfer switch, but says the generator and Powerwall are not directly integrated and the Powerwall does not charge from the generator (Tesla system-combination guidance). Enphase’s current 10C FAQ says generator integration is not supported. It describes an IQ Smart Switch expected in 2026, but an announced or expected product is not a released, available, permitted, utility-approved solution. Require a current model, manual, compatibility table, one-line, and installer authorization before giving an accessory credit.
Local grid programs also require more than a brand logo:
- Connecticut’s Energy Storage Solutions list dated June 5, 2026 includes Powerwall 3 and IQ Battery 10C. The page says final equipment approval remains contingent on DERMS integration. It does not prove contractor eligibility, project reservation, interconnection, payment, dispatch result, or continued model status (Connecticut eligible-equipment list).
- Mass Save ConnectedSolutions lists Tesla and Enphase at the manufacturer/inverter level. That does not independently establish exact-SKU acceptance, implementer availability, customer eligibility, or performance for the address (official Mass Save battery page; Teamsun program overview).
- Rhode Island Energy lists Tesla and Enphase as approved battery partners. The exact configuration, implementer, service territory, application, dispatch, recipient, and current terms still need confirmation (Rhode Island Energy battery program).
Program dispatch can lower state of charge before an outage and add cycling. Put reserve settings, event control, opt-out, data access, payment recipient, warranty treatment, telemetry responsibility, and transfer rules beside the equipment comparison. The Connecticut storage-program guide is an internal starting point; the current official application controls.
Do not reduce a 2026 residential quote by a new 30% federal credit. The IRS says the Section 25D Residential Clean Energy Credit is unavailable for property placed in service after December 31, 2025 (current IRS residential credit page). Ask a qualified tax professional about individual facts.

Can Enphase 10C be added to existing Enphase solar?
Often there is a documented path, but it is not a drop-in promise. The 10C requires IQ Combiner 6C and exact microinverter, gateway, branch, metering, firmware, interconnection, and backup review. Older Enphase batteries cannot directly mix with it.
Can Powerwall 3 be added to existing non-Tesla solar?

Enphase publishes up to 15 years or 6,000 discharged cycles, with 70% retention at year 10 and 60% at the end. Tesla publishes 10 years and 70% retention, with unlimited cycles for listed applications or 37.8 MWh for other use. Registration, internet, transfer, labor, purchase channel, and remedy terms matter as much as years.
Which system works with a standby generator?
Tesla documents coexistence through an external transfer switch but no direct integration and no charging Powerwall from the generator. Enphase says 10C generator integration is not currently supported. Do not rely on an expected accessory or a generic “generator ready” claim.
Are both batteries eligible for Connecticut Energy Storage Solutions?
The June 5, 2026 exact-equipment list includes both. Final DERMS integration, contractor, application, interconnection, customer, configuration, dispatch, and program approval remain separate gates.
Do Powerwall 3 and IQ Battery 10C qualify for a federal residential tax credit in 2026?
Not under the current Section 25D timing rule for a new 2026 installation. The IRS says the residential credit is unavailable for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Do not let a quote subtract an obsolete credit.
