A 5 kW solar system cost in New England is the gross cash price for an approximately 5-kilowatt DC module array, plus any required roof, electrical, or site work. “5 kW” alone does not establish panel count, inverter capacity, production, roof area, bill offset, financing cost, or program value. In Connecticut, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island, compare exact Wdc and scope; for a new residential system completed in 2026, use $0 for federal §25D.

These wattages are arithmetic inputs, not current Teamsun equipment or availability claims. The contract must name the real manufacturer, model, quantity, and wattage. The U.S. Department of Energy’s installer-selection guidance explains cost-per-watt arithmetic by converting kW to watts, but the buyer still has to identify the correct capacity.

Do not confuse kW with kWh. Kilowatts describe power or nameplate capacity; kilowatt-hours describe energy over time. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s electricity-measurement guide is the federal unit reference. A 5 kWdc label cannot, by itself, answer annual kWh.

  • exact module maker/model and quantity;
  • module watts and array Wdc/kWdc;
  • inverter model and total rated AC output;
  • stated DC-to-AC ratio and limiting/export settings;
  • current design revision and site-survey status;
  • whether 5 kW means DC module capacity, AC inverter capacity, export cap, or a rounded sales label.

If the salesperson cannot reconcile those fields, the proposal is not ready for a cost comparison.

What is a useful 2026 price screen for 5 kW?

A public price-per-watt figure can create a rough arithmetic screen, but it is not a quote. The source population may use larger systems, marketplace bids, different utilities, preliminary designs, varied equipment, and inconsistent scope. Smaller arrays also need not scale linearly from a state average.

The pages’ own 5 kW table values can differ slightly from this multiplication because their displayed $/W is rounded. That difference is a useful warning: never reverse-engineer a contract from a rounded web ratio.

A national EnergySage 5 kW article reports a 2026 marketplace result across a broader population. It is even less property-specific than the state screens. Berkeley Lab’s Tracking the Sun supplies a much larger research dataset, but its current project data runs through 2024, so it is historical relative to a 2026 quote.

Which costs belong in a 5 kW project budget?

Start with the gross cash PV base, then add required non-PV work in visible rows. Keep financing and benefits outside both figures. A low solar-only number is not the household budget if the roof, service, or site must change.

Ordinary modules, inverters, racking, PV balance-of-system, design, labor, stated permit/interconnection administration, commissioning, and closeout represented as included belong in the PV base. Separately identifiable reroof, battery, EV charger, major service work, trenching, structural reinforcement, tree work, or owner-retained work stays beside it.

Does 5 kW fit the home’s bill and future loads?

There is no universal “small-home” fit. The same 5 kWdc array can be too large, too small, or physically appropriate but economically mismatched depending on annual and interval usage, future electrification, tariff/export value, roof planes, and program sizing rules.

Build a load record from at least 12 consecutive bills when available, rate class, future loads and dates, expected efficiency changes, and occupancy. Record whether the model is intended to offset annual kWh, serve daytime use, qualify under a state/utility rule, or meet another explicit objective.

Do not infer “number of homes powered,” a universal bill reduction, or a payback period from 5 kW. Power capacity is not annual energy, and annual energy is not dollar value until current tariff, consumption timing, fixed charges, ownership, financing, program payments, maintenance, and uncertainty are applied.

How should production be modeled for a 5 kW array?

Production must start with the address and proposed design. New England state lines do not supply one annual 5 kW range, and this article publishes none. If two quotes both say “5 kW” but report different production, first reconcile exact Wdc, planes, shade, losses, inverter behavior, weather dataset, and export limits. Do not average the results.

How much roof does a 5 kW system need?

No universal roof-area figure is defensible without the selected module dimensions and a code-/permit-ready layout. Panel count alone omits gaps, module orientation, roof edges, fire access, ridges, valleys, vents, chimneys, skylights, snow/structure, attachment zones, and jurisdiction-specific review.

Use the exact current module data sheet, then test a real layout:

Raw module rectangle area = module count × module length × module width

That rectangle is not required roof area. It excludes spacing, setbacks, access paths, obstructions, attachment geometry, measurement tolerance, and unusable roof shapes.

DOE recommends that an installer assess roof condition and put needed repair or vent work in the proposal. A remote rectangle can support early screening, but only measured/site-validated design evidence can support a roof-fit claim.

Why can a 5 kWdc array use a different AC inverter capacity?

DC module capacity and inverter AC capacity are different fields. The inverter converts DC output to AC and may be intentionally sized differently from the module nameplate. The design must show the inverter model, AC rating, DC-to-AC ratio, input/string or microinverter mapping, and any clipping or export-control assumptions.

DC-to-AC ratio = array kWdc ÷ inverter kWac

This equation is arithmetic, not a target recommendation. PVWatts includes DC-to-AC ratio because it affects modeled AC output. Do not conclude that a lower AC number is automatically undersized or that equal DC/AC is automatically better; assess the exact architecture, module behavior, roof planes, utility/export configuration, and modeled energy.

Do not let “5 kW inverter,” “5 kW solar,” and “5 kW export” become interchangeable in contract, permit, utility, production, and pricing records.

How do CT, MA, and RI change the 5 kW cash-flow worksheet?

The physical array may share a size label across states, but the utility/program path does not. Keep all program, tariff, tax, REC, and bill-credit rows outside gross cash PV price, and verify current eligibility for the actual utility and property.

Connecticut PURA’s current RRES program page identifies 2026 tariff updates and Eversource/UI administration. None of these sources promises that a 5 kW label qualifies, sets its contractor price, or determines savings. Record program cash flows separately with the source, access date, applicant, eligibility decision-maker, recipient, formula, timing, term, tax/REC ownership, and fallback if unavailable.

How do I compare two bids that both say 5 kW?

Same rounded size does not mean same system. Freeze one property packet and compare the current site-verified revisions at the same acceptance point—installed, inspected, utility-authorized, commissioned, monitoring active, and closeout delivered.

Resolve unknowns with a trigger, responsible party, evidence, price rule, homeowner approval step, and redesign/cancellation consequence. A preliminary 4.92 kWdc quote with open electrical work is not directly comparable to a site-verified 5.04 kWdc quote with that work included.

How should financing and the 2026 federal row appear?

Compare the same-scope cash price to credit terms in separate columns. The amount financed and total payments are not the cash PV numerator. Ask for down payment, principal, cash-to-principal difference, APR, finance charge, payment count/schedule, prepayment, security, and total of payments.

The CFPB solar-financing report describes cases in which loan principal included markups or fees above cash price. Its 2024 federal-credit discussion predates current law, so use it for loan structure—not 2026 tax status.

For a new homeowner system completed in 2026, §25D = $0. The current IRS Residential Clean Energy Credit page, reviewed July 4, 2026, says the credit is unavailable for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. The IRS modification FAQ says prepaying does not preserve it when original installation completes later.
