Solar Installation Companies That Also Install Batteries

Choose a solar and battery installation company by testing system integration, commissioning, utility ownership, warranties, and long-term service.

A solar and battery installation company should be able to prove that it can design, permit, commission, and support one integrated energy system—not merely put panels and a battery on the same proposal. The best evidence is an address-specific one-line diagram, exact compatible equipment, a measured load study, a utility responsibility map, witnessed failure-state tests, and one written service-escalation path.

Using one company can reduce handoffs without eliminating them. The seller, designers, electrician, program implementer, manufacturer, and service provider may still be different entities. Compare the responsibility chain and its records.

Direct answer: Shortlist a solar-plus-storage company only when it returns one coordinated design package for the array, PV inverter, battery, gateway or controller, backed-up loads, service equipment, utility connection, monitoring, and future expansion. A logo, certification badge, or promise of “whole-home backup” cannot substitute for that package.

Does using one solar-and-battery company create one accountable system?

Only if the contract assigns the integration work to a named legal entity. One invoice may be convenient, yet the solar and storage obligations can still be split across manufacturers, subcontractors, software platforms, utility agents, and warranty administrators. The buyer’s goal is not one logo. It is one reconciled operating story.

Proceed to technical comparison when every row has an accountable party and a deliverable. Pause if roles are named but documents arrive only after a nonrefundable commitment. Stop if no party accepts responsibility for the interface between PV, battery, controls, and backed-up loads.

What should the integration evidence request contain?

Send every finalist the same evidence request before accepting a product recommendation. A capable company may need a site visit to finish it, but it should explain which fields are preliminary, which measurements remain, who closes them, and when the buyer can reject a material change.

Homeowner input package

Provide:

  1. twelve consecutive months of utility bills and interval data when available;
  2. service, meter, main-panel, subpanel, grounding, roof, attic, and proposed equipment-location photos;
  3. major-load nameplates, including heat pumps, resistance heat, well or sump pumps, refrigeration, cooking, water heating, EV charging, medical/accessibility equipment, and future electrification;
  4. a must-run, may-run, and exclude list for short, overnight, and multiday outages;
  5. roof age, known structural or leak history, shading constraints, and planned reroof date;
  6. desired solar-production objective, battery reserve, acceptable manual load management, and expansion plans; and
  7. any existing generator, transfer equipment, utility program, unusual tariff, or property/ownership constraint.

Company return package

Require the finalist to return:

  • the exact legal seller, contractor, designer, electrician, permit applicant, utility applicant, program implementer, and service provider;
  • a preliminary and then permit-ready/as-built one-line that shows the array, inverter architecture, battery, isolation device, meters or current transformers, backed-up boundary, disconnects, panels, service, and utility point;
  • exact proposed model numbers and quantities, allowed substitutions, and the manufacturer documents used to establish compatibility;
  • a solar production model with documented roof, shade, loss, weather, and degradation inputs, separate from the outage model;
  • a circuit-level load, continuous-power, motor-start, usable-energy, reserve, and islanded-recharge study;
  • permit, inspection, interconnection, program, commissioning, monitoring, warranty, service, and change-order ownership; and
  • an itemized price that separates solar, storage, service/panel work, controls, permitting, program work, monitoring, commissioning, and exclusions.

This is not a demand for free final engineering from every preliminary bidder. It is a demand for a deliverable schedule. The contract should identify post-survey variables, price/performance effects, and buyer approval or cancellation rights. How can a company prove exact solar, battery, and control compatibility?

Compatibility is configuration-specific. It depends on the exact battery generation, PV inverter or microinverter, gateway or controller, meters, transfer/isolation device, service topology, communications, software, array limits, backed-up boundary, and utility-approved settings. A brand-wide “yes” is incomplete.

Manufacturer materials show why. Tesla’s current installation library describes Powerwall as a system with battery plus a Backup Gateway, Backup Switch, or Gateway, and says installation should be performed by Tesla or a Tesla Certified Installer (Tesla Powerwall installation documents). Enphase’s current fourth-generation best-practices brief identifies an integrated set of IQ Battery 10C, IQ Combiner 6C, and IQ Meter Collar documentation and calls for generation-specific design and installation training (Enphase fourth-generation installation best practices). FranklinWH’s current commissioning guide requires the installer to identify which ports actually connect solar and to configure grid and export parameters for the installed arrangement (FranklinWH commissioning guide).

Those examples do not recommend a model, establish Teamsun support, or mean every configuration is accepted by a utility. They show the evidence standard: name the complete configuration and cite its current instructions.

Do not let “AC coupled,” “DC coupled,” or “hybrid” end the analysis. The AC-coupled versus DC-coupled guide owns that architecture decision. Here, the company must show that the selected path works as one permitted and serviceable system.

How should the installer study loads, motor starts, islanding, and solar restart?

Solar production and battery backup require two separate models. Annual solar kWh helps evaluate grid-connected production. Battery kW, kWh, controls, and outage conditions determine what can operate when the grid is unavailable. Blending them into one “offset” or “days of backup” percentage hides the design boundary.

The U.S. Department of Energy explains that ordinary grid-tied solar generally shuts down during a grid outage and that resilience requires a properly configured inverter and storage system (DOE solar and resilience basics). DOE also notes that solar-plus-storage can operate without grid support only if designed to do so (DOE inverter and grid-services basics).

Ask the combined installer for four outputs:

  1. Circuit scope: exact must-run, managed, and excluded circuits, including their panel and voltage.
  2. Power scope: simultaneous running case plus the hardest approved motor/compressor start with the expected baseload.
  3. Energy scope: load-by-hour kWh for a stated outage case, starting state of charge, owner reserve, conversion/condition allowances, and no-sun sensitivity.
  4. Operating sequence: grid loss, isolation, load shedding, islanded PV, full-battery curtailment, low-energy shutdown, black or dark restart where documented, and grid return.

Use blank arithmetic instead of a sales runtime:

beginning usable energy required = sum of (average load kW × hours) + owner reserve + documented allowances

start margin = configured duration-specific power/current − baseload present during the approved start

The first expression screens energy duration; the second screens a start event. Neither replaces manufacturer rules, measurements, wiring and control analysis, or professional design. Solar recharge belongs in a separate hourly sensitivity because clouds, snow, shade, season, array limits, active loads, curtailment, and low-energy restart behavior can change it.

Is one installer better than split solar and battery vendors?

Neither structure wins automatically. One prime contractor can reduce coordination, but the contract may still disclaim manufacturer labor, program performance, or third-party work. Split specialists can be appropriate when roles and interfaces are designed together. The risk rises when each vendor assumes the other owns the one-line, utility revision, commissioning, or callback.

The strongest one-company bid gives the homeowner one contract-level escalation owner and discloses every technical sub-role. The strongest split bid has an interface agreement, lead designer, and joint acceptance test.

Price both structures on the same scope. Do not compare one-company solar-plus-storage with a split battery-only hardware estimate. Normalize design, equipment, service/panel work, roof work, controls, permits, utility/program administration, monitoring, commissioning, warranty labor, finance charges, and future-expansion preparation.

Who owns permits, interconnection, and battery-program work in New England?

The company should assign the work, but it cannot guarantee an authority’s approval, schedule, or program eligibility. As of August 2026, utility and program pathways differ by state, utility, system ownership, export mode, and configuration. Put the responsible party and deliverable in writing, then verify current rules for the address.

Massachusetts says a distributed-generation owner must obtain an Interconnection Service Agreement and then Authorization to Connect from the local utility (Massachusetts utility interconnection). Connecticut’s Energy Storage Solutions program is overseen by PURA and administered with the Connecticut Green Bank, Eversource, and United Illuminating; its current page points to program-year decisions and administrator contacts (Connecticut PURA Energy Storage Solutions). Rhode Island Energy’s current battery-program page says a battery may be installed with new PV, added to PV, or used standalone under different constraints, and identifies approved implementer and interconnection responsibilities (Rhode Island Energy battery program).

Do not turn those pathways into an eligibility promise. Ask the finalist to cite the current tariff/manual for the account, show who submits each record, identify who may control the battery, explain export and reserve settings, state who receives any payment, and disclose what happens if approval or enrollment fails. A program application is separate from system safety, warranty, and outage suitability.

DOE notes that local permitting and inspection requirements vary and that utilities connect systems after required review (DOE rooftop solar permitting and inspection). A contractor’s familiarity can help, but the authority having jurisdiction and utility retain their roles.

What commissioning and failure-state tests should one company perform?

Commissioning should prove the combined design, not only show that each device appears online. The test plan must match the contract’s protected loads, metering, controls, solar path, and owner handoff. Save the results and any corrected settings.

NABCEP’s Energy Storage Installation Professional job-task framework treats development, design, installation, commissioning, and operations/maintenance as connected competency domains (NABCEP ESIP job-task analysis). The credential is voluntary and does not replace state licensing, manufacturer requirements, permits, inspections, or project-specific engineering. It is useful evidence only when the certified person’s current role in this project is named.

Manufacturer commissioning instructions are often more specific than a generic checklist. Enphase, for example, directs installers to validate component communications and metering and generate system/grid reports; Tesla’s current Powerwall 3 commissioning guide includes networking, software, import/export limits, configured output, and phase detection (Enphase commissioning guidance, Tesla Powerwall 3 commissioning guide). Apply the current U.S. manual and utility settings for the exact installed system; these links do not establish Teamsun authorization.

If a promised test cannot be performed at handoff, record why, who owns it, the safe interim state, the due date, acceptance criteria, and payment consequence. “Passed inspection” does not prove every performance or failure-state promise.

How should monitoring, warranties, service, and future expansion be divided?

One company should provide one intake route, but it should not blur separate warranties. The module, inverter, battery, controls, workmanship, roof, monitoring, and finance documents can have different providers, exclusions, claim procedures, labor/travel coverage, and transfer rules.

Ask whether the homeowner receives both ordinary user access and any appropriate ownership/administrative rights. Record who can change reserve, export, grid profile, program participation, device ownership, installer access, and alerts. Do not assume cloud access survives a change of installer or home ownership.

Future-ready claims need exact limits. “Expandable” should state maximum supported battery units, whether expansion must use a compatible generation, reserved conductor/panel/controller capacity, location and clearance, service/output limits, firmware or communications constraints, and whether permits or interconnection must be revised. A future generator or bidirectional EV pathway should appear only when the exact manufacturer configuration and local approvals support it.

If no verified provider accepts first response across the PV-storage interface, split the project or defer. Adding hardware now does not compensate for an unowned service boundary.

What belongs in the solar-plus-storage closeout package?

Closeout should let the homeowner operate and service the system without depending on one salesperson. Hold the contract-defined milestone open until applicable records are delivered and reconciled.

Use this folder structure:

  1. Contracts and changes: signed agreement, exhibits, ownership/finance documents, approved change orders, payment records, and written warranties.
  2. Design and as-builts: final array layout, one-line, panel/circuit schedule, protected/excluded loads, settings, equipment locations, and concealed-work photos.
  3. Equipment: exact models, quantities, serial numbers, data sheets, installation/owner manuals, listings, and manufacturer registrations.
  4. Authorities: permits, approved plans, inspections, utility application/agreement, authorization to operate/connect, and program enrollment/consent.
  5. Commissioning: normal and outage test results, metering validation, grid/export profile, failure-state findings, corrections, and owner-training signoff.
  6. Digital access: monitoring ownership/admin roles, data export, privacy/remote-access permissions, network requirements, and transfer instructions.
  7. Service: legal warranty providers, claim steps, labor/travel/diagnostic terms, emergency shutdown, safe bypass, escalation contacts, and future-change triggers.

Reconcile model and serial numbers across the contract, permit, utility record, program record, monitoring portal, manufacturer registration, and as-built. A substitution that appears only on an invoice is not closed out.

Frequently asked questions about solar and battery installation companies

Is it better to use the same company for solar panels and a battery?

It can reduce handoffs when one legal entity owns the combined design, applications, commissioning, closeout, and first service response. It is not automatically better if solar and storage teams still disclaim their interface. Compare evidence and contract responsibility, not company count.

Can a regular solar installer install a home battery?

Only if the responsible businesses and people hold the required state/local authority for their actual scope, meet the exact manufacturer’s requirements, and can obtain the project approvals. A solar credential or license may not cover every battery, service, panel, or building/fire task. Verify official records for the address.

Does one contract mean one warranty?

No. Modules, inverters, batteries, gateways, workmanship, roof work, monitoring, and financing can have separate warranties or providers. Require a matrix showing coverage, exclusions, labor/travel/diagnosis, claim route, transfer, and who handles a cross-system fault.

Will solar panels charge the battery during a power outage?

How many batteries do I need?

Who should file the utility and battery-program paperwork?

What should happen during the commissioning outage test?

Witness isolation and transfer, the protected boundary, approved simultaneous loads and motor start, islanded solar where supported, low-energy behavior, communications loss response, grid return, metering, monitoring, and owner operation. Save results and corrections; do not accept only an app screenshot.

Can I add another battery, heat pump, EV charger, or generator later?

Maybe. Require current limits for energy and power expansion, battery generation compatibility, service/panel/controller capacity, load-control changes, physical space, warranty, permitting, interconnection, and program settings. “Expandable” without those fields is a marketing claim.

What if the solar and battery use different monitoring apps?

That can be workable if the installer explains which meter is authoritative for each measurement, gives the owner appropriate access, documents data gaps, and owns cross-platform diagnosis. Two portals become a problem when neither party can reconcile a fault or export/control setting.

Does a manufacturer-certified installer guarantee good system design?

No. Manufacturer status may be required and can show product-specific training or access, but it does not replace state licensing, site engineering, permits, utility acceptance, contract quality, load studies, commissioning, or service evidence. Verify the exact person’s role and current status.

Should I choose solar only if no company can prove the storage scope?

Solar only, a documented battery-ready design, a qualified split-vendor structure, or deferral can all be rational. Do not add storage merely to keep a package together. Resolve the outage job, architecture, approvals, service boundary, and price before committing.

Research was completed August 10, 2026. Current search results were dominated by installer landing pages, directories, broad battery guides, and generic “questions to ask” lists. Representative results included SolarReviews’ installer questions and PowerLutions’ solar-and-battery questions. Their commercial formats helped identify the SERP pattern; they did not establish technical, legal, price, product, or Teamsun claims.

Homeowner discussions repeatedly raised warranty finger-pointing, installer access to commissioning tools, uncertain solar restart, adding storage later, service labor, and what to test before the crew leaves (r/solar battery-installer discussion, r/solar commissioning questions). Those discussions informed language and objections only; anonymous claims were not used as factual authority.

Primary sources controlled technical and current claims: DOE, state/utility pages, NABCEP, and manufacturer materials. Verify the applicable manual, firmware, utility/program rules, adopted code, AHJ interpretation, and installer authority before contract and installation.
